Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream is the best hand cream for dry hands this winter. Target lists the 2.7-ounce tube at $6.59, or $2.44 an ounce. The label names glycerin, urea, ceramide NP and dimethicone. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream is the plain fragrance-free tube at $5.49. Gold Bond Healing Aloe Hand Cream costs the least per ounce at $1.33.
Summers on a Midwest farm meant fence wire and hay bales, and both chewed up the skin across my knuckles. South Florida sun and salt water did their share the rest of the year. Since then I have used plenty of tubes, jars and balms. One habit held up every time: cream after the work, and work gloves for yard and farm work during it.
- Best overall: Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream, 2.7 oz, $6.59 at Target
- Plain fragrance-free tube: Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream, 2 oz, $5.49 at Target
- Lowest price per ounce: Gold Bond Healing Aloe Hand Cream Fresh, 3 oz, $3.99 at Target
- Ceramides and hyaluronic acid: CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream, 3 oz, $11.99 at CeraVe’s own store
Which hand cream is best for dry hands this winter?
| Hand cream | Size | Price | Priced at | Fragrance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream | 2.7 oz | $6.59 | Target | Maker says fragrance-free |
| Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream | 2 oz | $5.49 | Target | None in the list |
| Gold Bond Healing Aloe Hand Cream Fresh | 3 oz | $3.99 | Target | Listed, 35th of 37 |
| CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream | 3 oz | $11.99 | CeraVe store, Dermstore | None in the list |
| Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream | 2 oz | $11.59 | Target | Listed, plus three allergens |
Target’s product pages gave the prices for Eucerin, Neutrogena, Gold Bond and Burt’s Bees. Each tube showed in stock on October 18. CeraVe’s own store page lists $11.99, and Dermstore shows the same price with the 3-ounce tube in stock.
I judged each cream against the hand-care advice of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). It calls for a fragrance-free, dye-free hand cream or ointment. The ingredients to look for are lipids such as ceramides, humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, and occlusives such as petrolatum or mineral oil. The AAD also prefers tubes to thin pump lotions. Meanwhile, FDA’s recalls page, read on October 18, listed no hand cream or cosmetic recall among its entries dated October 8 to 17. It listed none for these brands either.
What does each hand cream for dry hands cost per ounce?
Gold Bond costs the least per ounce at $1.33, and Burt’s Bees costs the most at $5.80. A tube price hides that, so divide it by the ounces. Gold Bond is $3.99 ÷ 3 oz = $1.33 an ounce. Neutrogena is $5.49 ÷ 2 oz = $2.745, which rounds to $2.75. Eucerin is $6.59 ÷ 2.7 oz = $2.44. CeraVe is $11.99 ÷ 3 oz = $4.00. Burt’s Bees is $11.59 ÷ 2 oz = $5.80.

| Hand cream | Price | Ounces | Price per ounce | Ounces for $20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Bond Healing Aloe | $3.99 | 3 | $1.33 | 15.0 |
| Eucerin Advanced Repair | $6.59 | 2.7 | $2.44 | 8.2 |
| Neutrogena Norwegian Formula | $5.49 | 2 | $2.75 | 7.3 |
| CeraVe Therapeutic | $11.99 | 3 | $4.00 | 5.0 |
| Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk | $11.59 | 2 | $5.80 | 3.5 |
The last column is $20 ÷ the price per ounce, using the unrounded figures. So $20 buys about 15 ounces of Gold Bond but about 3.5 ounces of Burt’s Bees. CeraVe costs roughly three times as much per ounce as Gold Bond. Eucerin’s tube costs $1.10 more than Neutrogena’s and holds 0.7 ounce more, so it ends up about 30 cents cheaper per ounce.
Size matters in winter. The AAD says to moisturize after every handwash and more often in cold weather, so a small tube empties fast.
What do the labels claim, and what is in each tube?
Marketing claims and ingredient lists do not always match. The table sets each maker’s own claim beside its own list. By FDA’s labeling summary, ingredients go in descending order of predominance. Anything at 1 percent or less may be listed in any order. Positions below the middle of a list are therefore a rough guide only.
What does each maker claim, and what is in the tube?
| Hand cream | What the maker claims | What the ingredient list shows |
|---|---|---|
| Eucerin Advanced Repair | 5% urea, ceramide and natural moisturizing factors; 48-hour moisture; fragrance-free | Target’s 27-item list opens with water, glycerin and urea. Sodium lactate is ninth, ceramide NP 12th, lactic acid 13th and dimethicone 21st. No fragrance or paraben is listed |
| Neutrogena Norwegian Formula | Concentrated glycerin; “clinically proven to relieve dry skin”; fragrance-free | Seven ingredients: water, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, sodium cetearyl sulfate, phenoxyethanol, stearic acid, ethylhexylglycerin. Glycerin is second, and there is no petrolatum, mineral oil or dimethicone |
| Gold Bond Healing Aloe | “Clinically shown to help hydrate for up to 24 hours”; Target’s highlights say it contains no parabens | Hydroxyethyl urea is second, petrolatum sixth and aloe seventh. Ceramide 2 is 18th of 37. The same list names methylparaben (27th), propylparaben (30th) and fragrance (35th) |
| CeraVe Therapeutic | Three ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide; fragrance-free | Dimethicone is the 1% active. Dermstore’s inactive list names niacinamide, three ceramides, hyaluronic acid and cholesterol. It also lists propylparaben, and CeraVe’s page makes no paraben-free claim |
| Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk | 99.0% natural origin; paraben free; hydrates “for up to 24 hours” | Sweet almond oil is first, water second, and nonfat dry milk seventh. Fragrance, benzyl salicylate, eugenol and linalool appear near the end. No parabens are listed |
Which hand cream claims hold up against the label?
The Gold Bond row is the one to read twice. Target’s listing says the cream has no parabens, and the same listing’s ingredient list names two. The page does not say which is current, so read the tube in your hand before you decide. Meanwhile, Neutrogena’s claim of concentrated glycerin holds, since glycerin sits second behind water.
Fragrance is the other split. The AAD’s dry skin advice says to choose fragrance-free products and warns that “unscented” ones may still contain masking chemicals. Gold Bond and Burt’s Bees both list fragrance, and Burt’s Bees adds three named fragrance allergens.
Which hand cream fits which kind of dry hands?
Eucerin Advanced Repair carries urea, glycerin and a ceramide
Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream is the best match for the AAD’s checklist at the lowest price among the fragrance-free tubes. In the AAD’s sorting, glycerin is a humectant and ceramide NP is a lipid. Dimethicone is on its list of ingredients to look for. The 48-hour moisture figure is Eucerin’s own claim.

There is one catch for outdoor work. The label carries an alpha hydroxy acid warning. It says the cream may increase sun sensitivity, so Eucerin advises sunscreen. It also advises limiting sun exposure while you use the cream and for a week afterward. Skip it if you are outside all day without sunscreen on your hands.
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula keeps the list to seven ingredients
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream suits anyone who wants a short, fragrance-free list at $5.49. Glycerin is the humectant, and stearic acid and cetearyl alcohol soften the skin. However, it has no ceramide and none of the occlusives the AAD names.
Neutrogena’s page says a 2-ounce tube holds over 200 applications. If that is exactly 200, then $5.49 ÷ 200 is about 2.7 cents each, and less if the claim is conservative. Skip it if you want a heavy, balm-like feel, because the list has no petrolatum or mineral oil.
CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream adds three ceramides and hyaluronic acid
CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream is the choice when ceramides and hyaluronic acid matter more than price. It lists three ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and a 1% dimethicone active, and CeraVe calls it fragrance-free. At $4.00 an ounce, it costs about 64 percent more per ounce than Eucerin. Skip it if price per ounce drives the decision.

Gold Bond Healing Aloe costs the least per ounce but lists fragrance
Gold Bond Healing Aloe Hand Cream Fresh is the cheapest tube here, at $3.99 for 3 ounces. Its list opens with water, hydroxyethyl urea and glycerin. It also contains petrolatum, which the AAD sorts as an occlusive, plus dimethicone. Still, the fragrance and the paraben mismatch above make it a poor fit for anyone following the AAD’s fragrance-free advice.
Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk is the priciest per ounce and fragranced
Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream is built on sweet almond oil and beeswax. The maker calls it 99.0% natural origin, and it costs $11.59 for 2 ounces. It lists fragrance and three fragrance allergens, so it is a gift-shelf cream more than a dry-skin pick. Skip it if you follow the fragrance-free advice or if a $5.80-an-ounce price bothers you.
How often should you apply hand cream to dry hands?
The AAD says to apply cream after every handwash or sanitizer use. Do it while the skin is still damp, and more often in cold weather. That means keeping a tube at the sink, in a coat pocket and by the bed. A small tube is easier to carry, and a 3-ounce tube lasts longer between refills.

For nights, the same page suggests rubbing in cream and then putting on cotton gloves. It also recommends a humidifier before bed, and our guide to humidifiers for dry winter air covers that side. During the day, I keep gloves on for wet or rough jobs. The AAD also says to put broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher on exposed hands outdoors, year-round.

One extra product is worth knowing about. Target lists the Aveeno Repairing CICA Hand Mask at $3.99 for one pair of single-use gloves, in stock. The listing says to wear them about 10 minutes. It is not intended for overnight use, and the listing gives no weight, so there is no per-ounce price. What should you know before buying hand cream for dry hands?
What is the best hand cream for dry cracked hands?
Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream is the best match among these five. It lists glycerin, urea, ceramide NP and dimethicone and costs $2.44 an ounce at Target. Cracks that bleed, sting or do not improve need a doctor or dermatologist. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that severely dry skin can crack and lead to infection.
Is fragrance-free hand cream better for dry hands?
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free, dye-free hand cream, and it warns that products labeled unscented can still contain masking chemicals. Check the ingredient list for the word fragrance. Of the five creams here, Gold Bond and Burt’s Bees list it, while Neutrogena and CeraVe do not.
Is a pricier hand cream better for dry hands?
Price per ounce does not track the ingredient lists in this guide. The two priciest creams per ounce, Burt’s Bees at $5.80 and CeraVe at $4.00, differ sharply. One lists fragrance and the other does not. The cheapest, Gold Bond, lists petrolatum, dimethicone and a ceramide. Read the list, not the price tag.
When should dry hands see a dermatologist?
The American Academy of Dermatology says to see a dermatologist if dryness persists after you try its steps. It gives two more reasons: dryness that may come from an underlying condition, and a product that causes burning, stinging or irritation. Stop using any cream that irritates your hands, and ask a clinician about what to use instead.
Which hand cream for dry hands would I buy?
I would buy Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream, because it lists glycerin, urea, ceramide NP and dimethicone at $2.44 an ounce. The maker calls it fragrance-free. I would keep sunscreen on my hands outdoors, given the alpha hydroxy acid warning. If that warning is a problem, I would pick Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream at $5.49. I would add CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream when ceramides and hyaluronic acid matter more than the extra $1.56 an ounce over Eucerin.
