The best inverter generator for home backup depends on what has to stay running. The Honda EU2200i covers a refrigerator, lights and a furnace fan. Add a sump pump and you want more headroom. The Honda EU3200i, Champion 201531 and Westinghouse iGen5000c all have it, at very different prices.
After a storm on the farm, nobody asked which machine was quietest. The question was what had to keep running: the freezer, the sump or well pump, the furnace blower in winter. I have run fueled generators and chainsaws through enough cleanups to know the usual failure is dull. Gas left in the carburetor all summer, and a machine that will not start on the one night it matters.
Quick picks by need
- Best quiet pick for the essentials: Honda EU2200i — $1,199, 1,800 running watts
- Best Honda with headroom: Honda EU3200i — $2,799, 2,600 running watts
- Best dual fuel: Champion 201531 — $779, 3,250 running watts on gas
- Most running watts: Westinghouse iGen5000c — $1,199, 3,900 running watts
Inverter Generator Comparison
An inverter generator converts its engine’s output to clean power and can slow the engine down at light loads. That is why these run quieter and burn less fuel than an open-frame model doing the same small job. The table lines up rated output, run time at the load each maker states, weight, noise and price.
| Generator | Running watts | Run time | Weight | Noise | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda EU2200i | 1,800 (2,200 max) | 8.1 hr at 1/4 load | 47.4 lb | 48 to 57 dBA | $1,199 |
| Honda EU3200i | 2,600 (3,200 max) | 8.6 hr at 1/4 load | 59.1 lb | 54 to 58 dBA | $2,799 |
| Champion 201531 | 3,250 gas, 2,925 propane | 10 hr gas, 25 hr propane at 1/4 load | 51.8 lb | 64 dBA at 23 ft | $779 |
| Westinghouse iGen5000c | 3,900 (5,000 peak) | 18 hr at 1/4 load | 105.8 lb | As low as 52 dBA | $1,199 |
Honda’s own pages list $1,199 for the EU2200i and $2,799 for the 49-state EU3200i. Home Depot lists the Champion at $779, and Westinghouse’s own store lists the iGen5000c at $1,199. Westinghouse rates it at 18 hours on its 3.4-gallon tank at a quarter load.

How Much Does an Inverter Generator Cost?
Price divided by running watts shows what each unit charges for steady output. That is the number that matters when a refrigerator and furnace fan run all night.
| Generator | Price | Running watts | Cost per running watt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Champion 201531 (gas) | $779 | 3,250 | $0.24 |
| Champion 201531 (propane) | $779 | 2,925 | $0.27 |
| Westinghouse iGen5000c | $1,199 | 3,900 | $0.31 |
| Honda EU2200i | $1,199 | 1,800 | $0.67 |
| Honda EU3200i | $2,799 | 2,600 | $1.08 |
The Champion is the cheapest steady watt here on either fuel. The Westinghouse costs seven cents more per watt and adds 650 running watts and a remote start. Both Hondas cost roughly three to four and a half times what the Champion charges per watt. The extra money buys the quietest published figures in the table and dealer service through Honda’s locator. It does not buy more power.
Honda EU2200i
Honda rates the EU2200i at 1,800 running watts and 2,200 at peak, from a 0.95-gallon tank that runs 8.1 hours at a quarter load. It weighs 47.4 pounds and lists 48 dBA at a quarter load. Honda’s page lists a CO-MINDER sensor that shuts the generator down before nearby carbon monoxide turns dangerous. The residential warranty runs three years. The page marks it not for sale in California.
Honda’s wattage calculator puts an Energy Star refrigerator at 192 running watts. Its furnace fan options include 600 watts and its sump pump options include 800, for a total of 1,592. The EU2200i covers that on paper. A motor draws extra power for a moment as it starts, though, so the margin is thin. Skip it if you also want a microwave on the same generator. Honda’s calculator lists microwaves at 1,000 to 1,500 watts.
The CPSC lists EU2200i recalls in 2019 and 2020 for fire and burn hazards. The 2020 recall covered units sold from February 2018 through January 2020. A unit bought new today falls outside that window. Check the serial number against the CPSC table on any used one.
Honda EU3200i
The EU3200i is rated at 2,600 running watts and 3,200 at peak, per Honda’s spec page. It runs 8.6 hours per 1.2-gallon tank at a quarter load and weighs 59.1 pounds. Noise is 54 dBA at a quarter load and 58 at rated load. Honda lists the same CO-MINDER shutdown and three-year residential warranty as the smaller model. The 49-state EU3200IAN is $2,799 on Honda’s page, and the 50-state EU3200IAC is $2,899.
The extra 800 running watts over the EU2200i give a refrigerator, furnace fan and sump pump room to start and run. Skip it if budget decides. The Champion below costs under a third as much and lists more running watts, though it is much louder.
Champion Dual Fuel Inverter Generator
Champion’s page lists the 201531 at 3,250 running and 4,500 starting watts on gasoline, and 2,925 running watts on propane. Run time is up to 10 hours on gasoline and 25 hours on propane at a quarter load. Home Depot lists it at $779. It weighs 51.8 pounds, and Champion’s CO Shield shuts the engine off when it detects unsafe carbon monoxide levels. The warranty is three years with free lifetime technical support.
Propane is the reason to look at a dual fuel model. It keeps in storage better than gasoline, which matters for a generator that sits for months. Champion lists one 120-volt duplex household outlet, an RV outlet and a 12-volt outlet. Two plugs fill fast, so plan on a heavy-duty cord or a transfer switch. Skip it if noise matters: 64 dBA at 23 feet is the loudest figure in the table.
The CPSC lists one Champion generator recall, in 2012, for two portable models sold at Costco. The 201531 is not one of them.
Westinghouse iGen5000c
Westinghouse’s store lists the iGen5000c at $1,199, with 3,900 running watts, 5,000 peak watts and a wireless remote start. It runs up to 18 hours on a 3.4-gallon tank at a quarter load. Noise is as low as 52 dBA. Westinghouse backs it with a three-year limited residential warranty and lists automatic low-oil and carbon monoxide shutdown.
That output is enough for a refrigerator, furnace fan, sump pump and a microwave together, with room left over. The cost is weight. At 105.8 pounds it is more than twice the Honda EU2200i. Skip it if you will be lifting it into a truck bed or carrying it to a campsite. The CPSC lists Westinghouse generator recalls in 2017 for the iGen2500 and iPro2500 and in 2020 for the iGen4500DF and WGen5300DFv dual-fuel models. None covers the iGen5000c.

What Size Generator Do I Need for Home Backup?
Add the running watts of everything you want on at once, then leave room for the biggest motor’s start-up surge. A gas furnace needs power for its blower and controls, not for heat. The fan is the load to count. Honda’s wattage calculator gives these running-watt estimates and notes that your own appliance may differ, so check its nameplate.
| Appliance | Running watts |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator or freezer (Energy Star) | 192 |
| Sump pump | 800 or 1,050 |
| Furnace fan (gas or fuel oil) | 300 to 875 |
| Microwave | 1,000 to 1,500 |
| Television | 120 to 300 |
If a battery backup sump pump covers the pump, the generator only has to handle the fridge and furnace fan. Our look at how many hours a battery backup sump pump buys you shows where that stops working. If all you need is phones, a router and lights, a portable power station skips the fuel and the fumes.
Can You Run an Inverter Generator Indoors?
No. Run it only outdoors, and far from the house. The CPSC says never to run a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed space, even with the doors open. Keep it at least 20 feet from the home and any other building. Not on a porch, not in a carport, exhaust pointed away from the house.
The CPSC also tells buyers to choose a generator with carbon monoxide shutoff. It estimates that PGMA G300-2018 certified models would cut CO poisoning deaths by 86 percent. For UL 2201 certified models the estimate is 100 percent. All four generators here list a CO shutdown feature on their maker or retailer pages. Put battery-powered CO alarms on every level of the house, and outside sleeping areas, as the CPSC advises.
Two more rules from the Red Cross. Let the generator cool before refueling, because spilled gasoline on a hot engine can ignite. Keep fuel in an approved can outside living areas. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and look for a UL or ETL listing on any cord or transfer switch you buy.
How to Safely Connect a Generator to Your House
Plug appliances straight into the generator, or use a heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cord rated for the total load. Never plug the generator into a wall outlet to power the house. The Red Cross calls that backfeeding and says it risks electrocution for utility workers, neighbors and your own household. For a permanent hookup, have an electrician install a power transfer switch. It has to meet the National Electrical Code and local rules.
Frequently Asked Questions About Inverter Generators
Can an inverter generator run a refrigerator?
Yes. Honda’s wattage calculator puts an Energy Star refrigerator or freezer at 192 running watts. Every generator in this roundup has many times that, even the 1,800-watt Honda EU2200i. The compressor pulls extra power for a moment at start-up, so leave headroom.
How far from the house should a generator be?
At least 20 feet from the home and other buildings, per the CPSC. It also says not to run one on a porch or in a carport.
Can you plug a generator into a wall outlet?
No. Backfeeding through a wall outlet can electrocute utility workers and neighbors, according to the Red Cross. An electrician can install a transfer switch that connects the generator to the house wiring properly.
How long can an inverter generator run?
It depends on the load. Honda lists the EU2200i at 8.1 hours at a quarter load and 3.2 hours at its rated load. Run only the essentials, and a tank lasts far longer than it does with every outlet in use.
What Is the Best Inverter Generator for Home Use?
If the budget allows, I would buy the Honda EU2200i for a refrigerator, lights and a furnace fan. It is the lightest and quietest option here, though the price per watt is high. Add a sump pump or a microwave to the list and the Champion 201531 at $779 makes more sense, especially if propane storage appeals. The Westinghouse iGen5000c gives the most running watts and a remote start for the same $1,199 as the small Honda. The Honda EU3200i suits anyone who wants Honda’s quiet running with room to grow.
