The best peel and stick wallpaper for renters is the RoomMates Weathered Wood Plank in black, $30.23 a roll at Walmart in October 2026. Its listing promises two things a lease cares about. The strips reposition, and they come off without sticky residue. Tempaper’s Marble Slab costs less for a whole wall and WallPops costs more, but all three want the same wall. Smooth, clean and painted.

I have patched, painted and papered enough walls to know the wall decides the job long before the roll does. Dusty flat paint grabs nothing, and a roll that holds on a satin finish will let go of builder-grade matte. Before I price any roll, I run a palm across the wall and check the sheen. Sheen is just how shiny the paint is. That one test changes which brand a renter should even consider.

The picks

  • Best overall for renters: RoomMates Weathered Wood Plank, black, $30.23 a roll at Walmart, listed as repositionable and residue-free.
  • Lowest cost for one wall: Tempaper Marble Slab in graphite, $16.99 a roll, with the strictest wall rules.
  • Mid-price roll from WallPops: Sisal Stone in gray, $34.99 a roll, and a warning against textured walls.
  • Fewest rolls for a 10 by 8 foot wall: WallPops Eloise in taupe, $49.99 a roll, three rolls instead of four.

What does peel and stick wallpaper for renters cost for one wall?

Roll price hides the real bill, because you can only buy whole rolls. Take a 10-foot by 8-foot accent wall, which is 80 square feet. Add a 15 percent allowance for trimming and pattern matching, which is an assumption and not a maker figure. That makes 92 square feet to cover. Dividing by each roll’s coverage and rounding up gives the rolls needed.

ProductRoll size and priceRolls for 92 sq ftTotalCost per square foot of wall
Tempaper Marble Slab, graphite28.18 sq ft, $16.994$67.96$0.85
RoomMates Weathered Wood Plank, black28.2 sq ft, $30.234$120.92$1.51
WallPops Sisal Stone, gray28.2 sq ft, $34.994$139.96$1.75
WallPops Eloise, taupe30.75 sq ft, $49.993$149.97$1.87

The math: 92 divided by 28.2 is 3.26, so four rolls. 92 divided by 30.75 is 2.99, so three rolls with a quarter of a square foot to spare. Each total is rolls times roll price. The last column divides that total by the 80 square feet of actual wall.

Sources, checked October 2026: Tempaper’s Marble Slab page ($16.99, 20.5 inches by 16.5 feet), Walmart’s RoomMates listing ($30.23, same roll size), WallPops’ Sisal Stone page ($34.99, 28.2 square feet) and its Eloise page ($49.99 for taupe, 20.5 inches by 18 feet). Patterns change the price. Single rolls on Tempaper’s site run $12.99 to $65.00 across patterns in stock. WallPops’ run $32.79 to $69.99. So the table prices one pattern per brand, and a wall a few feet wider can flip which roll size wastes less. Run the same division with your own wall.

Is peel and stick wallpaper safe for renters?

Mostly yes, on the right wall. All three makers promise removal without sticky residue, and Tempaper adds that its paper peels off at any corner. Those are maker claims, and none of them covers a wall with weak paint underneath. The CPSC recalls database showed no wallpaper recall for RoomMates, Tempaper or WallPops in October 2026.

Paint is the weak point. Cheap flat paint can lift when the adhesive pulls, and that is the damage a deposit gets docked for. Stick one small piece in a closet corner, wait a few days, then peel it slowly. Tempaper’s own page suggests testing a sample on any unusual surface. Its samples cost $8.00, and WallPops’ cost $5.99.

Removal is slow work. Tempaper says to lift a corner and peel slowly away from the wall, and to take off outlet covers and switch plates first. Pulling fast is how paint comes off with the paper. Save the leftover strip from your last roll as a spare for repairs.

Does peel and stick wallpaper work on textured walls?

No. WallPops’ Sisal Stone page says the paper should not go on textured walls, only smooth, clean, dry, painted surfaces. Tempaper does not recommend textured walls either. Bob Vila’s application guide says wallpaper applies best to smooth walls and may peel off textured ones.

Knockdown and orange peel finishes are bumpy sprayed textures, and they leave the adhesive little flat surface to hold. If your rental has one, skip peel and stick on that wall. A painted accent wall of smooth drywall is the only target worth buying for.

How long should paint cure before wallpaper goes up?

Tempaper’s page says newly painted surfaces should cure for at least four weeks before application. It also says to wipe the wall with a 1-to-1 mix of water and alcohol first. The paper works best on surfaces primed and painted in eggshell, satin or semi-gloss, which are the shinier paint finishes.

Getting the paint sheen and cure time right matters more to peel-and-stick success than which brand of wallpaper you buy.

Check your lease before repainting. A repaint without permission is a bigger deposit problem than wallpaper. If your landlord approves one, our paint sprayer guide covers the tools that lay down an even coat. Then give the paint its four weeks.

How do renters hang peel and stick wallpaper without damage?

Clean the wall, mark one strip at a time and smooth from the top down. WallPops’ install page gives three steps. First, clean, dry and smooth the surface, then measure out the paper’s width from the corner and mark the wall lightly in pencil. Second, cut the first strip to wall height, apply it from the top and smooth it out. Third, trim the excess at the ceiling and baseboard.

Tempaper’s page lists two tools, a squeegee and a precision knife. A squeegee is a flat plastic scraper that pushes air bubbles to the edge. Wipe the wall first with Tempaper’s 1-to-1 mix of alcohol and water. WallPops adds that its paper should not go on walls with non-stick paint or soap residue. If you buy more than one roll, Tempaper says to make sure the lot numbers are the same.

WallPops says Sisal Stone is easily repositionable while installing. Tempaper makes no repositioning claim, so cut and place that one with more care.

Can renters use peel and stick wallpaper in a bathroom?

Yes, with limits. Tempaper’s FAQ says its paper can go in bathrooms and in areas with steam and indirect moisture. Direct splash zones are a different question, and that page does not cover them. WallPops answers its own bathroom question only by saying the paper is completely removable and safe in rentals. That is a statement about the wall, not a humidity rating.

Tempaper also lists kitchens and backsplashes as uses but gives no heat or grease guidance. So keep a roll off the wall beside a burner, and ask the maker before you try it.

Which peel and stick wallpaper patterns are easiest for renters?

Small geometrics and textures hide mistakes, while large repeats expose them. A repeat is the distance before a pattern starts over, and every strip has to line up with its neighbor. Wood plank, stone and grasscloth looks forgive a seam that drifts. A big floral or a mural does not. That is why the RoomMates plank is the first-wall pick.

If you want the busier pattern, order a sample first. Tempaper’s is $8.00 and WallPops’ is $5.99. WallPops marks samples final sale, per its page. Then buy every roll in one order and check that the lot numbers match.

One accent wall behind the bed takes far fewer rolls than a whole room.

Can a 10 by 8 foot wall take fewer rolls than the table shows?

Sometimes, if the pattern is plain. Roll width sets the limit, not roll area. A 10-foot wall is 120 inches, and 120 divided by 20.5 inches is 5.85, so you need six strips. The Tempaper, RoomMates and Sisal Stone rolls are 16.5 feet long, which gives two strips of up to 8.25 feet each. That leaves 3 inches of spare length on an 8-foot wall. Three rolls would do it with no pattern to match and a careful cut.

At three rolls, the totals fall to $50.97 for Tempaper’s Marble Slab, $90.69 for RoomMates’ Weathered Wood Plank and $104.97 for Sisal Stone. That is the best case. The table keeps its 15 percent allowance because a pattern repeat or a crooked cut uses up 3 inches fast, and a fourth roll costs less than a short strip. Eloise rolls run 18 feet, so each one gives two strips of up to 9 feet.

How long does peel and stick wallpaper last?

No maker here publishes a lifespan. Tempaper’s page says the paper can be left up as temporarily or as permanently as you like. For cleaning, Tempaper says to wipe it with a damp cloth. WallPops’ listing description calls its paper washable, but the page body gives no care steps, so a damp cloth is the safe choice.

RoomMates Weathered Wood Plank: the pick for a first accent wall

I look for two promises on a renter’s roll: strips that reposition and an adhesive that lets go clean. RoomMates’ Weathered Wood Plank in black makes both on its Walmart listing. The page calls it instantly removable and repositionable in full strips. It costs $30.23 for a 20.5-inch by 16.5-foot roll, and the page showed an add-to-cart button in October 2026.

The listing gives no square footage. Do the math: 20.5 inches times 16.5 feet is about 28.2 square feet. A wood plank pattern has no big repeat to line up, so a seam that drifts a quarter inch hides easily. A large floral would show the same drift. That makes plank the forgiving choice for a first wall.

Tempaper Marble Slab: lowest cost, strictest wall rules

Tempaper’s Marble Slab in graphite is $16.99 a roll, and each roll is 20.5 inches by 16.5 feet, or 28.18 square feet. Four rolls cover the 92 square feet in the table for $67.96. That is the lowest wall cost here. The page also promises clean removal without sticky residue.

The catch is the rulebook. Tempaper wants a primed wall in eggshell, satin or semi-gloss, a four-week paint cure and a water-and-alcohol wipe. Its page makes no claim that the paper repositions. So a crooked first strip is a bigger risk here than with RoomMates. A sample is worth the $8.00 before you commit.

WallPops Sisal Stone and Eloise: the NuWallpaper line

WallPops now sells the NuWallpaper line on its own site. Its Eloise page lists a NuWallpaper item number (NUS4467). It says the paper repositions easily during install and leaves no sticky residue. Sisal Stone in gray is $34.99 for a 28.2-square-foot roll, so four rolls cost $139.96 for our wall.

Eloise is the oddball. The taupe and charcoal rolls are $49.99. The navy, maroon and tea green rolls are $59.99. Each roll is 30.75 square feet. That fits 92 square feet into three rolls, so taupe lands at $149.97. It costs the most per wall, yet it leaves the least paper in the closet.

What to skip when buying peel and stick wallpaper for renters

Skip any roll sold without a stated wall requirement. I skip a brand the moment its page cannot name the paint finish it wants. Skip textured walls entirely, and skip a wall painted in the last four weeks. Skip buying on roll price alone. The table shows a $16.99 roll and a $49.99 roll landing about $82 apart for the same wall.

Also skip the assumption that removable means permitted. Your lease decides that. If you are also sealing a rental against winter, the draft stopper guide covers fixes that leave the walls alone.

Frequently asked questions about peel and stick wallpaper for renters

How many rolls of peel and stick wallpaper do renters need?

For a 10-foot by 8-foot wall, plan on four rolls of 28 square feet or three rolls of 30.75 square feet. Multiply wall width by height, add 15 percent, divide by the roll’s coverage and round up. Your own wall may flip the answer.

Will peel and stick wallpaper pull paint off the wall?

It can, mainly on flat or fresh paint. Tempaper recommends primed walls in eggshell, satin or semi-gloss and a four-week cure after painting. A sample patch in a closet corner shows you the risk before it costs a deposit.

Do renters need a landlord’s OK for peel and stick wallpaper?

Read the lease first, then ask in writing. A removable product is not the same as a permitted one. Some leases ban any wall covering, and a written yes is cheap protection.

Can you return peel and stick wallpaper if the pattern looks wrong?

Sometimes, if the rolls are unused. WallPops’ page lists 30-day returns for unused items and calls samples final sale. Tempaper’s product page gives no return terms, so read its shipping and returns page before you order.
