I could not find an electric turkey fryer for home kitchens that holds a whole bird and is in stock this fall. The Masterbuilt 10L XL Electric Fryer is the one whole-turkey electric fryer I found still on sale, but Masterbuilt’s own manual marks it for commercial use only. For a whole turkey at home, buy the Hamilton Beach Electric Roaster Oven, 22 Quarts, Red (32235G), listed at $80.40 at Home Depot. For fried turkey parts, the Presto 10-Quart Kitchen Kettle XL is the in-stock option.
I come from a large extended family, with plenty of nieces and nephews at every holiday table, and the oven is always the bottleneck. I have used countertop deep fryers and electric roaster ovens to get around it. A crowded kitchen also made me careful around anything hot, heavy and plugged in. Our backyard cookout guide covers the outdoor side of feeding that many people.
- Biggest bird for the money: Hamilton Beach Electric Roaster Oven, 22 Quarts, Red (32235G), $80.40 at Home Depot.
- Self-basting lid, longest warranty: Proctor Silex 18 Quart Electric Roaster Oven with Self-Basting Lid (32211), $109.99 at Proctor Silex, 24-lb turkey.
- Porcelain cookwell: Nesco 18 Qt. Red Roaster Oven (MWR18-12), $99.99 at Nesco, 22-lb turkey.
- Fried turkey parts only: Presto 10-Quart Kitchen Kettle XL (06009), $89.99 at Presto, 4-quart oil capacity.
Which electric turkey fryer or roaster oven can you buy now?
Three electric roaster ovens and one small fryer were listed for sale on October 18. The whole-turkey electric fryers were either discontinued, sold out or marked for commercial use. The table shows what each maker or retailer page said that day.
| Model | Type | Turkey size the maker lists | Price, October 18 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton Beach Electric Roaster Oven, 22 Quarts, Red (32235G) | Roaster oven, 1,450 W | 28 lb (product page); 24 lb (category page) | $80.40 (Home Depot) | Buyable online at Home Depot; out of stock at Hamilton Beach |
| Proctor Silex 18 Quart Electric Roaster Oven with Self-Basting Lid (32211) | Roaster oven, 1,450 W | 24 lb | $109.99 (Proctor Silex); $109.95 (Home Depot) | Add to cart, ships free |
| Nesco 18 Qt. Red Roaster Oven with Porcelain Cookwell (MWR18-12) | Roaster oven, 1,450 W | 22 lb | $99.99 (Nesco); $106.25 (Home Depot) | In stock |
| Presto 10-Quart Kitchen Kettle XL (06009) | Multi-cooker and fryer, 1,800 W | None listed; 4-qt oil capacity | $89.99 (Presto) | In stock |
| Masterbuilt 10L XL Electric Fryer, Boiler and Steamer (MB20012420) | Electric turkey fryer | 20 lb | $149.99 (Masterbuilt, Home Depot) | Sold, but the manual says commercial use only |
| Butterball XL Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer (23011114) | Electric turkey fryer | 20 lb | None | Discontinued at Home Depot |
| Butterball XXL Digital Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer | Electric turkey fryer | 22 lb | None | No longer available at QVC |
Each price and status comes from the page named in the row. Wattage for the three roasters comes from Home Depot’s spec sheets, and the Presto figure comes from Presto’s product page. Turkey sizes are the makers’ own numbers.
Has any electric turkey fryer or roaster here been recalled?
No. I searched the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database on October 18 for Hamilton Beach, Proctor Silex, Nesco, Presto, Masterbuilt and Butterball. Masterbuilt’s recalls are all smokers, from 2006, 2013 and 2016. Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex show a 2003 slow cooker recall, not a roaster. The Nesco recall on file covers coffee bean roasters from 2021. Presto’s only deep-fryer recall dates to 2001 and covered basket handles.
Why is the Masterbuilt electric turkey fryer not a pick?
Its own manual says it is not meant for home kitchens. The current instruction manual in Masterbuilt’s manual library covers model MB20012420. Near the front, it prints “For commercial use only” and “Not intended for household use.” Masterbuilt and Home Depot still list the fryer at $149.99. However, a household guide cannot recommend an appliance its maker labels that way.
The rest of the manual explains the caution. It calls the fryer an attended appliance and says never to leave it unattended. Clearance should be 18 inches at the back and sides and 40 inches above. The manual also says never to move the unit while oil is above 100°F, and it warns that the heating element can trip a circuit breaker. If you already own one, call Masterbuilt before Thanksgiving and ask which use applies to you.
Which other electric turkey fryer listings should you skip?
Skip the Butterball-branded fryers, because you cannot buy them. Home Depot’s page for the Butterball XL (23011114) shows it as discontinued and not buyable. QVC’s Butterball XXL Digital page says the item is no longer available. Some roundups still recommend both.
Also skip the VEVOR Commercial Deep Fryer, 3000W, even though Best Buy’s title calls it an electric turkey fryer. Best Buy files it under commercial appliances, and the listing gives a 12.7-quart basket capacity. That is a restaurant fryer with a turkey keyword on it.

Which roaster oven holds the biggest turkey?
The Hamilton Beach 22-quart does. Its product page says it holds a 28-pound turkey. Hamilton Beach’s roaster category page is more cautious, though. It says the 22-quart roasters take turkeys up to 24 pounds, and that tall birds may not fit under the lid. Plan on 24 pounds and you will not be caught short.
A roaster oven is a countertop oven with a removable pan, a rack and a lid. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service says cooking time and temperature are generally the same as in a regular oven. Preheat to at least 325°F, raise the bird on the rack and keep the lid on. Then check that the thigh and wing reach 165°F.
Is the Hamilton Beach 22-quart roaster the best value?
Yes, at Home Depot’s price. Home Depot lists the red 32235G at $80.40 and shows it as buyable online. Hamilton Beach’s own store lists it at $109.99 but out of stock. The dial runs from 125°F to 450°F, the pan lifts out for cleaning, and a lift-out rack comes with it. Home Depot’s spec sheet gives 1,450 watts and a one-year warranty.
Skip it if counter space is tight. Home Depot lists it at 24.2 inches wide, 16.75 inches deep and 11 inches high.
Is the Proctor Silex 18-quart roaster worth the higher price?
It is if you want the longer warranty and a self-basting lid. Proctor Silex sells the black 32211 for $109.99 with free shipping, and Home Depot lists it at $109.95. The maker says it holds a 24-pound turkey. Its page also describes a domed lid that keeps moisture in and a dial from 125°F to 450°F.
Proctor Silex’s page lists a three-year limited warranty, the longest of the three. It measures 12.93 inches high, 23.15 inches wide and 15.63 inches deep, per the maker.
What does the Nesco 18-quart roaster do differently?
It uses a porcelain enamel cookwell and fits a 22-pound turkey. Nesco’s store lists the red MWR18-12 at $99.99, marked down from $134.99 and in stock. Home Depot has it at $106.25. The page lists a 1,450-watt base, a range of 200°F to 450°F and a rack with lift-out handles.
Check the color before you order. Scheels shows the white version of the same Nesco roaster as out of stock.

What does each roaster cost per pound of turkey?
The Hamilton Beach costs the least per pound of bird, even at its conservative 24-pound figure. I divided each October 18 price by the turkey size the maker lists. The Masterbuilt row is there for comparison only.
| Model | Price, October 18 | Turkey size listed | Price per pound of turkey capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton Beach 22 Qt (32235G) | $80.40 | 28 lb / 24 lb | $2.87 / $3.35 |
| Nesco 18 Qt (MWR18-12) | $99.99 | 22 lb | $4.55 |
| Proctor Silex 18 Qt (32211) | $109.99 | 24 lb | $4.58 |
| Masterbuilt 10L XL fryer (not a pick) | $149.99 | 20 lb | $7.50 |
The arithmetic is simple. $80.40 divided by 28 is $2.87, and divided by 24 it is $3.35. Next, $99.99 divided by 22 is $4.55, and $109.99 divided by 24 is $4.58. Finally, $149.99 divided by 20 is $7.50. A roaster also needs no oil, so there is no fill to buy each year.
Can an electric turkey fryer handle turkey parts?
A small one can, and the Presto 10-Quart Kitchen Kettle XL (06009) is the one in stock. Presto sells it for $89.99. The page lists a 10-quart liquid capacity, a 4-quart oil capacity and 1,800 watts. It names fries, chicken and donuts but gives no turkey weight. So treat it as a fryer for legs, thighs, wings or a split breast.
The tempered glass cover lets you watch the food. The base is fully immersible once the heat control comes off, and Presto gives a one-year limited warranty. One catch: Presto says it cannot ship to addresses in Washington State. Oil is cheap at this size. Four quarts is one gallon, and Walmart listed Great Value vegetable oil at $9.66 a gallon on October 18.

Is an electric turkey fryer safe to use indoors?
Fire-safety groups say oil fryers carry real risk. NFPA states that turkey fryers that use cooking oil are not safe, because they hold large amounts of oil at high temperatures. Instead, it suggests buying a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant. NFPA also estimates 1,139 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day in 2024, or 321 percent of the daily average.
The CPSC turkey fryer release counted 75 fire, flame or burn incidents since 1998, 28 of them in 2002. Most happened while the oil was heating, before the turkey went in. It says to thaw and dry the meat completely. If a fire starts, call 911 and never use water on it.
USDA’s frying guidance is stricter still. It says to pick a safe spot outdoors, keep a whole bird to 12 pounds or less, and hold the oil at 350°F. It also says never to leave hot oil unattended. That is why the roaster ovens above are the picks for a whole bird.

When should you thaw and roast a turkey for Thanksgiving?
Start a 20-pound bird thawing by Saturday, November 21, because Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. The USDA thawing guide allows about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds in a refrigerator at 40°F or below. A thawed turkey can then wait 1 or 2 days before cooking. Roast times come from USDA’s chart for an unstuffed bird at 325°F.
| Bird weight | USDA fridge thaw | Latest fridge start for Nov. 26 | USDA roast time, unstuffed, 325°F | Roasters that fit it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 lb | 1 to 3 days | Monday, Nov. 23 | 2¾ to 3 hours | All three |
| 16 lb | 3 to 4 days | Sunday, Nov. 22 | 3¾ to 4¼ hours | All three |
| 20 lb | 4 to 5 days | Saturday, Nov. 21 | 4¼ to 4½ hours | All three |
| 24 lb | 5 to 6 days | Friday, Nov. 20 | 4½ to 5 hours | Hamilton Beach; Proctor Silex at its limit |
Each start date counts back from the long end of the USDA thaw range. The last column compares the bird with each maker’s listed size. A 24-pound turkey is over Nesco’s 22-pound figure, so it is left out of that row.
What if you are short on thawing time?
Use USDA’s cold-water method, which takes about 30 minutes per pound. A 16- to 20-pound bird needs 8 to 10 hours, sealed in a leak-proof bag. Change the water every 30 minutes and cook the turkey right after. Let it stand 20 minutes before carving, as USDA advises. More countertop helpers are in our kitchen workhorses guide and our Instant Pot Duo review, or browse small appliances.
What do cooks ask about an electric turkey fryer?
Can you cook a whole turkey in an electric roaster oven?
Yes. USDA describes the roaster oven as an extra oven for a turkey or large roast, with the same time and temperature as a regular oven. Preheat to at least 325°F, set the bird on the rack and keep the lid on. Check the thigh and wing with a food thermometer for 165°F. Follow the roaster maker’s manual too.
How long does a 20-pound turkey take in a roaster oven?
Plan on 4¼ to 4½ hours for an unstuffed 18- to 20-pound turkey at 325°F, using USDA’s roasting chart. USDA says roaster ovens generally match regular oven times. The chart is approximate, so the thermometer has the final say at 165°F. Then let the bird stand 20 minutes before carving.
Does an electric turkey fryer have to be used outdoors?
The sources disagree. Masterbuilt’s manual for its 10L XL says indoor use only, with 18 inches clear at the back and sides and 40 inches above. USDA’s frying guidance says to pick a safe spot outdoors for deep-fat frying a turkey. Both agree on one rule: never leave hot oil unattended.
How big a turkey fits in a 22-quart roaster oven?
Plan on 24 pounds. Hamilton Beach’s product page for its 22-quart roaster says it holds a 28-pound turkey. However, the brand’s roaster category page says its 22-quart models take turkeys up to 24 pounds. It adds that tall birds may not fit under the lid, so the lower figure is the safer plan.
Which electric turkey fryer or roaster would I buy?
I would buy the Hamilton Beach Electric Roaster Oven, 22 Quarts, Red (32235G) at $80.40, because it fits the biggest bird for the least money and uses no oil. If the price moves, the Nesco 18 Qt. Red Roaster Oven at $99.99 fits a 22-pound bird. For fried legs and wings on the side, I would add the Presto Kitchen Kettle XL. I would not buy the Masterbuilt 10L XL for a home kitchen while its manual says commercial use only.
